The last of the dives in the Mir’s took place today, I never tire of seeing them in action, it really is a sight to behold. Today’s dive for Mir 2 was a bit of a rescue mission, as it had to save one of the ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicle) that James Cameron had left behind a couple of weeks ago. The fibre optic cable that connects the ROV to the Mir snagged and broke leaving the ROV stuck in the Marconi room of Titanic. The bot and the fibre optic cable are all safely back on the Keldysh thanks to a superb rescue by Genya.

The final retrieval of Mir 1 was the most spectacular of all. As the Keldysh uses sonar to keep a constant eye on the subs two and a half miles below, it also attracts Pilot Whales. On this occasion when Mir 1 reached the surface she was surrounded by them, quite a sight! We were also blessed with the best sunset of the expedition, and have been extremely lucky in having great weather for the whole dive.  

Unfortunately my time on Keldysh is coming to an end, it’s been a tremendous experience that I will remember forever. I got to accomplish a lifelong dream and then some. I’ve become one of only a handful of people (approx 200 out of 6 billion or so) in the world to actually see the Titanic!

It’s very odd being at sea for this amount of time and having this much fun, you easily lose track of the days, it seems like only yesterday I entered the competition and now it’s all over. I’m a little sad it is all coming to an end, in my time here I’ve met a lot of wonderful people from all round the world, I don’t really want to face reality again! Of course it’s very easy to get hooked on doing this kind of thing, so I think it’ll be the Bismark next…
